The Esplanade Concert Hall is the principal classical venue inside Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, the performing arts centre on the Marina Bay waterfront. The centre, nicknamed 'the Durian' for its spiky aluminium-clad domes, was officially opened on 12 October 2002 and is run by the not-for-profit Esplanade Co Ltd. The Concert Hall is the performing home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Its auditorium seats 1,628, rising to 1,825 when the 197 gallery seats are included, and it houses the largest pipe organ in Singapore - a Klais Orgelbau instrument of 61 stops and 4,740 pipes. Adjustable acoustic canopies, reverberation chambers and acoustic draperies let the hall be tuned for orchestral, choral and amplified performances.
