The Victoria Theatre is the playhouse half of the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall complex at 9 Empress Place, in Singapore's Civic District. The building began as the Town Hall: its foundation stone was laid in 1855 and it was completed in 1862 to a design by the municipal engineer John Bennett, with a theatre on the ground floor and government offices above. After Queen Victoria's death in 1901 the Town Hall was refaced to match the Victoria Memorial Hall built beside it, and the renovated building reopened on 11 February 1909 as the Victoria Theatre, with a performance of The Pirates of Penzance. The 54-metre clock tower joining the two halls was completed in 1906. The theatre is where 'Majulah Singapura' was performed in public for the first time, in 1958, after a major renovation that added air-conditioning and soundproofing. Its auditorium seats 614 with a curved seating plan and room for an extended forestage or an orchestra pit, and the 2010-2014 refurbishment rebuilt most of the theatre behind the retained facade, adding changing rooms, a loading bay, an atrium and a dance studio under a raised roof. The complex reopened on 15 July 2014 and was gazetted a National Monument on 14 February 1992.
