The Victoria Concert Hall is the oldest concert hall in Singapore and the performing home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. It forms one half of the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall complex at 9 Empress Place in the Civic District, two neoclassical buildings joined by a 54-metre clock tower. It was built between 1903 and 1905 as the Victoria Memorial Hall, a memorial to Queen Victoria funded by public subscription and designed by R. A. J. Bidwell of Swan and Maclaren, and opened by Governor Sir John Anderson on 18 October 1905; the hall served as a hospital for bombing victims during the Battle of Singapore, was the venue for the Japanese war crimes trials in 1946-1947, and hosted the founding of the People's Action Party on 21 November 1954. Renovated in 1979 to house the newly formed Singapore Symphony Orchestra, it was renamed the Victoria Concert Hall, and the orchestra played here until the Esplanade opened in 2002. The auditorium seats 673 - 538 in the stalls and 135 in the circle - and a Klais pipe organ of 2,012 pipes stands centre stage. Closed in June 2010 for a four-year, S$180-million refurbishment by W Architects, the complex reopened on 15 July 2014 with a coffered ceiling and a smaller, higher balcony that freed volume for the acoustics. The complex was gazetted a National Monument on 14 February 1992.

Capacity: 673Transit: City Hall MRT (East-West and North-South lines, EW13/NS25) and Raffles Place MRT (EW14/NS26) are both about a 10-minute walk from 9 Empress Place. From Raffles Place, Exit H is the shortest route: turn towards the Singapore River, pass the Fullerton Hotel and cross Cavenagh Bridge (about 6 minutes).Opened: 1905
